Rocotillo Chile Pepper

Scientific Classification

Capsicum baccatum

Heat rating in Scovilles:

1500 – 2500

The Rocotillo chile pepper originated in Peru. Unripe rocotillos are green or yellow, but the color at maturity varies. Common colors are red, orange or brown. Rocotillos are almost spherical in shape, and can be dried easily. They are generally an inch long (2.5cm) and around an inch (2.5cm) wide.

These are very popular peppers in the Caribbean, especially Puerto Rico. In fact, some people call them Puerto Rico peppers because of how often they’re used there.
